What do conductors do? Wave their hands around for dramatic effect? Keep count so a large gouop of musicians stay together? Cue said musicians so they know when to come in? Perhaps of the above, but also so much more.  Despite having one of the most visible roles in the orchestra, the nuances of the conductor's role is not particularly obvious to the casual viewer.  Earlier this year, I got the chance to observe part of a conducting workshop for the very first time, and learned a little bit more from the perspectives of conductors at various levels of experience.  The two-day Conducting Intensive workshop was taught by Tengku Irfan at Juliette Music & Arts Academy with participants and observers of various levels of conducting experience.  Photo courtesy of Juliette Music & Arts Academy Starting at the very beginning: analysis and interpretation Long before taking the stage, even before rehearsing with the orchestra, the work of the conductor has already begu...

"One of the key objectives is to place the viola in the spotlight, challenging the common perception of the viola as merely an accompanying instrument, hidden in the orchestra's harmony." - Juliette Music & Arts Academy founder, Jessica Cho   Earlier this month, Juliette Music & Arts Academy presented a sold-out concert at their cosy venue with a rather unconventional concept: the evening would feature only the viola .  The concert, Voices of the Viola, featured academy co-founder Juan Sebastian Castillo Diaz with notable Kuala Lumpur-based violists Dr. Andrew Filmer, Datin Veronika Thöne, and Toko Inomoto.  Volists Dr. Andrew Filmer, Toko Inomoto, Datin Veronika Thöne, and Juan Sebastian Castillo Diaz perform Hendrik Waelput's Andante Cantabile for 4 Violas Underperformed viola repertoire "Tonight's programme celebrates the viola's profoundly human voice - an instrument that speaks not from above, but from within. We trace its journey through wor...

What marks the transition from being a talented amateur orchestral musician to being a full-fledged professional? Getting paid? Attaining some form of qualification or higher education? The Selangor Symphony Orchestra  recognises that this transition is far more nuanced. In a career where being able to effectively collaborate and become a cohesive part of something bigger than any one individual, a variety of soft skills that cannot be taught academically are required from the get go.  As a part of their broader educational pipeline for classical musicians, the Selangor Symphony Orchestra launched their SSO Fellowship programme in 2024. This fellowship serves as a bridge between the youth orchestra experience and the standards of professional orchestras. A first of its kind in Malaysia, this programme is a structured pathway for talented and committed young musicians to gain real professional orchestral experience while still receiving mentorship and guidance throughout the pr...

When you think about learning music, instrument maintenance and repair are propbably not at the forefront of your mind. Instead, they are propbably the things you hope you'll need the least in some fuzzy future.  For Kane, however, "How do I repair this?" was one of the questions that occurred to him early on when he played the flute, saxophone, and trumpet as part of his secondary school band, the Michaelian Military Band.  View this post on Instagram A post shared by Wei Kane🔸 (@kanewooi) Before embarking on a career in repair, though, he studied performance at ASWARA, completing his diploma in flute and clarinet. He is an accomplished player, having performed with ensembles like the Malaysian Philharmonic Youth Orchestra, the Philharmonic Winds of Malaysia, the Kuala Lumpur Performing Arts Centre Symphonic Band, as well as ensembles from his hometown, the Perak Philharmonic Orchestra, the Kinta Valley Wind Orchestra, and the Ipoh Philharmonic Orche...

For almost a decade, three prolific names in Malaysian classical music have been carving out time to make music together in addition to their individual projects.  Amongst their various roles in music education and performance, Robin is a sought-after piano tutor who specialises in the mechanics of piano playing, Mabel is an examiner with the ABRSM, and Andrew is an associate professor at the Institute of Music at UCSI.  Despite their demanding roles and packed schedules, they've been making it a point to come together to play as the Anjung Trio for almost a decade.  Why? Simply because it's fun! As Mabel puts it, "I enjoy the friendship and makan sessions - it is such an enjoyable experience making music and curating a concert programme with friends. I think when you have a good relationships with the performers, it is easier to sync up and sound more cohesive as a group." The typical piano trio consists of a piano, violin, and cello.  This trio of a piano, violin, ...
