Making a Glorious Reality

Image
Gemilang has been a deeply impactful piece of music - an anthem of inspiration and triumph - that has moved us since the very first time we heard Jaclyn Victor perform it 20 years ago. This year, its English version, titled Glorious , was released and it is every bit as amazing! I'm looking forward to having all of those feels kicked up a notch next week at Tutan Entertainment's The Art of Sound . The concert, which promises to take audiences on a journey exploring the textures and emotions that music can evoke, will feature an exciting finale: Jaclyn Victor will be premiering the orchestral version of Glorious with live symphonic accompaniment by the Tutan Festival Orchestra . Bringing artistic vision to life This orchestral version is the product of artistic collaboration between Tutan Entertainment's conductor laureate Kevin Field and Azhad Sulaiman , arranger and orchestrator extraordinaire.  As an experienced and sought-after conductor, Kevin brings a vision for ove...

Instagram Inspiration to In-Person Performance

"In Malaysia, where musicians are often trained to prioritise technical precision, Nancy serves as a refreshing and much-needed role model. Bringing her to Art of Sound is not just about featuring a world-class violinist - it's about introducing a way of thinking that challenges musicians to grow beyond just playing their instruments. Her presence is an opportunity to inspire a new generation to approach music with depth, intention, and a strong sense of artistic identity." - Kevin Field, Conductor Laureate of the Tutan Festival Orchestra Tutan Entertainment is gearing up for its upcoming concert,  The Art of Sound , taking place on April 19th and 20th at PJPAC in 1Utama. The programme for the concert is set to take audiences on a journey exploring music in its most extreme forms - from the soft, delicate elegance of Ravel's Pavane for a Dead Princess to the big, bold, and blazing finale of Stravinsky's Firebird Suite . Also on the programme is the achingly beaut...

Careers in Classical Music: Arts Communicator, Dr. Andrew Filmer

Image
How did a drought in Queensland over a decade ago impact the way you might discover your next favourite piece of classical music in Kuala Lumpur today? Since completing his PhD in Musicology at the University of Otago, New Zealand in 2013, Dr. Andrew Filmer has had a prolific career as an educator, researcher, and performer. A thread that runs through all of his work and has set him apart from many musicians is his dedication to making classical music feel more accessible to audiences in the current moment.  "There are many things in the arts that are an acquired taste," he tells me, drawing parallels to learning to appreciate foods like durian and bitter gourd. With classical music in particular, there is a daunting amount of prerequisite knowledge that if you don't get it, then you probably don't hear or see it when it happens, and then you're probably missing out on the magic of that piece of music.  Enter the arts communicator  - someone who guides you on the ...

Experiencing the beauty of classical music through a community orchestra

Classical music is often described in two very different ways: beautiful  and boring . The beauty of classical music is typically said to lie in its complexity. This complexity, however, really does require the listener's time and attention for the many delightful intricacies to reveal themselves. For those of us who might not be inclined to pay attention, or perhaps not know what to pay attention to , this otherwise rich tapestry of sound could seem almost...boring.  The Selangor Philharmonic Orchestra  is a community orchestra that seeks to promote the beauty of classical music in Selangor. I spoke with Mr. Chan Ling Chee, the Musical Director of the orchestra about how they go about this task.  Programming The orchestra plays several public concerts each year, and they take effort to plan the programmes of these concerts to create varied experiences for concertgoers. "If we have already played a heavy classical work for one concert, the next one will feature a lig...
