Careers in Classical Music: Flute Technician, Kane Wooi

When you think about learning music, instrument maintenance and repair are propbably not at the forefront of your mind. Instead, they are propbably the things you hope you'll need the least in some fuzzy future.  For Kane, however, "How do I repair this?" was one of the questions that occurred to him early on when he played the flute, saxophone, and trumpet as part of his secondary school band, the Michaelian Military Band.  View this post on Instagram A post shared by Wei Kane🔸 (@kanewooi) Before embarking on a career in repair, though, he studied performance at ASWARA, completing his diploma in flute and clarinet. The Perfect Instrument for Blending Classical & Jazz

On July 19th, Orkestra Kuala Lumpur will take their audience on an exploration of classical, jazz, and the in-between with their concert Classical to Jazz .  Kawai Piano Malaysia artist Tengku Mohamad Hadif will be joining Orkestra Kuala Lumpur to perform Gershwin's Piano Concerto in F, a challenging piece that is lush with tonal colours. The Anjung Trio: Because It's Fun!

For almost a decade, three prolific names in Malaysian classical music have been carving out time to make music together in addition to their individual projects.  Amongst their various roles in music education and performance, Robin is a sought-after piano tutor who specialises in the mechanics of piano playing, Mabel is an examiner with the ABRSM, and Andrew is an associate professor at the Institute of Music at UCSI.  Despite their demanding roles and packed schedules, they've been making it a point to come together to play as the Anjung Trio for almost a decade.  Why? Simply because it's fun! As Mabel puts it, "I enjoy the friendship and makan sessions - it is such an enjoyable experience making music and curating a concert programme with friends. I think when you have a good relationships with the performers, it is easier to sync up and sound more cohesive as a group."
